Definition of the noun prolactin

What does prolactin mean as a name of something?

noun - plural: prolactins

  1. gonadotropic hormone secreted by the anterior pituitary; in females it stimulates growth of the mammary glands and lactation after parturition

Explanation

  1. Prolactin, also known as luteotropic hormone or luteotropin, is a protein that in humans is best known for its role in enabling female mammals to produce milk, however, it is influential over a large number of functions with over 300 separate actions of PRL having been reported in various vertebrates. Prolactin is secreted from the pituitary gland in response to eating, mating, estrogen treatment, ovulation, and nursing. Prolactin is secreted in a pulsatile fashion in between these events. Prolactin also plays an essential role in metabolism, regulation of the immune system, and pancreatic development.
    • also known as PRL, Süt hormonu, Prolaktin hormon, LTH, Luteotrop hormon, Luteotropni hormon, Luteotropin, Laktotróp hormon, Tejelválasztást serkentő hormon, Luteotropiskais hormons
  2. prolactin is a gene.
  3. Prolactin: Human prolactin is encoded by the human prolactin gene. This secreted lactogenic glycoprotein is expressed in both anterior pituitary lactotropes and the decidual endometrium. It acts primarily on the mammary gland and, in synergy with estrogen, induces progesterone release by corpus luteum cells to render the uterine mucosa suitable for implantation.
