A portrait bust of the Victorian painter Sir Joseph Noel Paton. It was carved by his older sister Amelia Hill. The Patons were born into a weaving family in Dunfermline (their father was a textile designer), but both Joseph and his brother Waller became prominent painters in Edinburgh. Amelia taught herself how to sculpt and was nearly forty before she first exhibited any of her work. In her early fifties she married David Octavius Hill, the famous Edinburgh artist, now best known for his photography.
