Miscellanea

  1. Argos: In Homer's Odyssey, Argos is Odysseus' faithful dog. After twenty years struggling to get home to Ithaca, Odysseus finally arrives at his homeland. In his absence, reckless suitors have taken over his house in hopes of marrying his wife Penelope. In order to secretly re-enter his house to ultimately spring a surprise attack on the suitors, Odysseus disguises himself as a beggar, and only his son Telemachus is told of his true identity. As Odysseus approaches his home, he finds Argos lying neglected on a pile of cow manure, infested with lice, old and very tired. This is a sharp contrast to the dog Odysseus left behind; Argos used to be known for his speed and strength and his superior tracking skills. Unlike everyone else, including Eumaeus, a lifelong friend, Argos recognizes Odysseus at once and he has just enough strength to drop his ears and wag his tail but cannot get up to greet his master. Unable to greet his beloved dog, as this would betray who he really was, Odysseus passes by and enters his hall, and Argos dies. The simplicity of the relationship between Argos and Odysseus allows their reunion to be immediate and sincere.
  2. ARGOS: The Advanced Research and Global Observation Satellite was launched on 23 Feb 1999 from SLC-2W, Vandenberg AFB, CA, atop a Boeing Delta II. Construction of the spacecraft bus and integration of the satellite's nine payloads was accomplished by Boeing at their Seal Beach, CA facility. The program was funded and led by the DoD's Space Test Program as mission P91-1. The nine payloads were research and development missions by nine separate researchers. The $220M mission was operated by Air Force Space Command's Space and Missile Systems Center's Test and Evaluation Directorate from their RDT&E Support Complex at Kirtland AFB, NM. ARGOS was the first mission operated 100% from the new state-of-the-art, commercial-off-the-shelf Kirtland facility; all previous SMC satellite missions had been operated in total or at least in part from the preceding center at Onizuka AFS, CA.
  3. Argos is a secreted protein that is an inhibitor of the epidermal growth factor receptor pathway in Drosophila melanogaster. The name derives from the phenotype of mutant flies with eye defects and refers to Argus Panoptes. The mechanism by which Argos attenuates the EGFR pathway is by sequestration of ligand and not by direct interaction with the receptor. Argos binds to the epidermal growth factor domain of the Drosophila ligand Spitz and prevents its interaction with the EGFR. Argos represents the first example of ligand sequestration as a mechanism of inhibition in the ErbB family.
  4. ARGOS: Advanced Rayleigh Guided Ground Layer Adaptive Optics System is a multi-star adaptive optics system which is built for use with the Large Binocular Telescope. With ARGOS, both sides of the LBT will be equipped with a multi-laser beacon system and corresponding wavefront sensors. The artificial beacons are created by Rayleigh scattering the earth´s atmosphere using high power pulsed green lasers. The purpose of ARGOS is to generate six artificial laser guide stars to correct the ground layer turbulence above the LBT mirrors. This will decrease the distortions induced by the atmospheric turbulence, and therefore the imaging and spectroscopic capability of LUCIFER, the LBT spectrograph.
  5. Argos is a fictional setting.
